SME digitalisation grants in Malaysia: what is open for software

As of October 2026, Geran Digital PMKS Madani, which matched 50 percent of an invoice up to RM5,000, stopped accepting applications on 5 September 2025. Budget 2026 announced further digitalisation support, but businesses should confirm what is open on official channels before planning around a grant. Macoin Technologies in Puchong, Selangor, can scope software that stands on its own merits.

What was Geran Digital PMKS Madani?

Geran Digital PMKS Madani (GDPM) was a Ministry of Finance grant run with BSN, MDEC and MCMC. It matched 50 percent of the invoice, up to RM5,000, for eligible micro, small and medium enterprises subscribing to digital services from appointed providers, with up to three services per application.

Eligibility included registration with SSM, a local authority or SKM, at least 60 percent Malaysian ownership, at least six months of operation and a minimum average annual turnover of RM50,000. Covered categories included digital marketing, e-POS, HR payroll or CRM, ERP or accounting, digital signature, IoT, cyber security, e-Invoice and AI.

The application platform states that applications closed effective 6 September 2025, with 5 September 2025 as the final day to apply. Grant funds went only to services from appointed digital partners. Macoin does not claim to be an appointed GDPM provider, and no grant should be assumed for a project with us.

Is MDAG-AI an option for an SME?

MDAG-AI, administered by MDEC, offered up to 70 percent of project cost or RM2 million, whichever is lower. It required Malaysia Digital or MSC Malaysia status and AI products, so it targets technology companies rather than SMEs buying software. Its most recent window closed on 18 July 2025.

If your business is building an AI product of its own, watch MDEC's grant pages for a future window and check the eligibility conditions carefully. Most companies commissioning a CRM, mobile app or internal system will not meet the MD status requirement, and should not plan a project around this grant.

For AI adoption inside an ordinary business, the useful question is which repetitive task the system removes and how many staff hours that saves. A measurable case is what justifies the spend, whether or not a grant is available.

What did Budget 2026 announce for digitalisation?

Budget 2026 included RM53 million under the Malaysia Digital Accelerator Grant for technologies such as AI and blockchain, a 50 percent additional tax deduction for SME spending on AI and cyber security training, and the comprehensive rollout of e-Invoice from 2026. Application details are published separately by each agency.

Announcements in a budget speech are not the same as an open application form. Agencies publish eligibility, deadlines and appointed providers later, and allocations can be exhausted quickly. Check MDEC, BSN, SME Corp and your bank's official pages, and be cautious of third-party sites quoting figures without a source.

The e-Invoice rollout matters even without a grant. If your invoicing, POS or ordering system cannot produce compliant e-Invoices, you may need an integration with LHDN's MyInvois system or an update from your software vendor. Plan that work with your accountant before deadlines arrive, and confirm your phase on LHDN's official e-Invoice pages.

How should you plan a software project without relying on a grant?

Size the first release so it pays for itself through saved hours, fewer errors or new sales, and treat any grant as a bonus. Prioritise one workflow, define how success will be measured and keep later features in a separate phase that can be funded once the first release is working. This keeps the decision independent of any grant timetable.

A grant capped at RM5,000 covers part of a subscription, not most of a custom system. Projects that only make sense with funding tend to stall when the funding does not arrive. A smaller, well-scoped first phase is easier to approve internally and quicker to deliver.

Macoin is flexible about budget and will shape a first release around your range. Typical starting points are a CRM tailored to your sales process, automation of a repetitive approval or WhatsApp workflow, or an integration that removes double entry. WhatsApp +60 18-263 7350 with your workflow for a quotation.

  • Check statusConfirm the grant is open on the agency's own page before planning.
  • Check the providerGrants usually require an appointed provider; ask for proof.
  • Size the projectMake the first phase worthwhile without the grant.
